about

Here's a song I wrote for the opening of the National Centre For Organic Gardening in the late 80's.
It's a track from the 1989 album 'HoT Stuff' written by me and the kids of Holy Trinity School, Matlock Bath.
Just done a re-master and CD re-press of this legendary album and I'll be posting the rest of album soon!
The original was on cassette and took Matlock Bath Primary School on to win a prize in the final of a 'Schools Creative Excellence' competition in 1989.
On a great day out the children collected their prize from Magnus Magnusson at Alexandra Palace.
The album's full of songs, raps and soundscapes written by me, Claire Wesson and the children and it's still a great listen!

lyrics

THE POISON SONG © John Gill

1st Chorus
There's a poison (there's a poison!)
In the garden (in the garden!)
There's a poison in the garden pass it on (pass it on!)
From the birds and the bees, down to the rivers and the seas
Up to the clouds down in the rain that falls on you and me

Verse 1
Well the birds fell silent and the trees stood still,
A hush came over the land
The busy bees their gathering ceased,
Here comes the chemical man
Here comes the man with a gun in his hand (watch out!)
He sprays a deadly spell
He wields no hoe he knows friend nor foe, Here's where the ladybird fell

2nd Chorus
There's a poison (there's a poison!)
In the garden (in the garden!)
There's a poison in the garden pass it on (pass it on!)
There's a lotta trouble loomin' where those pretty flowers a—bloom
It's in the clouds it's in the rain that falls on everyone

Verse 2
You know we gotta be careful what we sprinkle and spray
If we wanna look after our world today
I see I'd better take care, I see I'd better beware
It should be fun but this gardening is a deadly affair!

Repeat 1st chorus

Middle
Organochlorine in the ground,
Organochlorine in the birds
Organochlorine building up in me
They say you've gotta have faith
You know it's perfectly safe
That's what they said about DDT!

Repeat 2nd chorus
Repeat 1st chorus

*Alternative lyrics for vs 2
Well the kids are hyperactive and the dog's been sick!
The hedgehog's having a mercury fit
I see I'd better take care, I see I'd better beware
It should be fun but this gardening is a deadly affair!
